New Dragon: A Tale of Determination and Will

Life is a journey of glorious uncertainties. Let’s walk through the story of the ‘New Dragon Restaurant’ and its founding father.  

Hing Lau is a man whose life has been nothing short of struggles from a young  age. Coming from rural China, he was born poor with seven siblings. Life was a real uphill battle during his early days, with no surety of the next meal on the  table.  It was a constant struggle to make ends meet, with days filled with hunger and restless nights.  He worked numerous twelve hour days of hard manual labor, just to only earn one sweet potato to eat. Undeterred by these circumstances, he sacrificed his childhood with exertion and determination.  Whether it was working extra shifts in the rice fields, or hiking up the mountains to collect sellable items, his goal was always to have enough money for the next family meal.  

Turning the tides, Hing got his life-changing opportunity when he moved to America.  After many attempts to come here, and even a failed attempt to swim across the pacific ocean, Hing finally was able to call America home.  With only $20 in his pocket, Hing turned his grueling background of hard earned life lessons and created the ‘New Dragon Restaurant’.  A restaurant instilled with strong family values and an unstoppable work staff.

Hing translated his testing times into positive momentum. He created an exemplary culture of leadership and camaraderie by showing his hard-work and dedication. Look at him, as he comes in first and leaves last; leading by example and owning all the work. Focusing on a wide range of fine Chinese cuisine, Hing always sees food as a blessing.  His huge family-sized portions ensures everyone always leaves with full bellies and satisfied smiles.

There’s real beauty in life; from its peaks to its valleys, and everything else in between. Hing’s story of hardship to success is a shining example of this. From working the rice fields, to successfully running a slew of Chinese Restaurants, our founding father has demanded a story of determination and willpower.  Hing’s unmatched work ethic is the epitome of the American Dream.  With these values instilled into the very core of our restaurant, we proudly serve you our customers, flavorsome food from compassion and respect.  

As generations of customers change over these 30 years, so too our leadership follows.  A new generation of ‘Dragons’ are taking over.  Hing’s sons, Jim and John, aspire to carry on the legacy our founding father has established.   With Hing still in the kitchen, slanging Crab Rangoons for all the people to enjoy, he continues to lead our team in the background.  

Never forgetting the core of our values, Jim and John bring a burst of innovation to compliment our foundation.  They’ve recently introduced a renovated lounge called the ‘Dragon’s Oasis’.  This pleasant atmosphere brings you a trendy space customized with vibrant LED accent lights, a unique color changing cloud ceiling, and a one of a kind koi fish river bar. 

The new blends with the old. With tradition to innovation, the New Dragon’s are bringing big city vibes into our small beach town of Narragansett. Making our humble family restaurant your favorite go-to spot for great food and fun entertainment.
